Sarah Jessica Parker was born on 25 March 1965, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to an aspiring writer father, Stephen Parker, and an elementary school teacher, Barbra. She had three siblings. After her parents divorced, her mother married Paul Forste who brought four children. Sarah now had three full siblings and four half siblings.

Trained in singing and ballet, Sarah was cast in the Broadway production of The Innocents, which led her family to relocate to New Jersey. Sarah then was cast in The Sound of Music along with her four siblings, and landed the leading role in the Broadway production of Annie from 1979 to 1980.

Sarah made her film debut in Rich Kids (1979) and won her first starring role in Square Pegs (1982). She received further attention for her role in the hit Footloose (1984). The next year, Sarah starred as well as danced in Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Her success in both films smoothed her way for steady work throughout the decade.

Besides working in the film, Sarah also starred in a number of TV shows, including the miniseries A Year in the Life (1986) and the drama series Equal Justice (1990). In early '90s, Sarah starred alongside Steve Martin in L.A. Story (1991), as Nicholas Cage's fiancée in Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), and as the wife of Ed Wood in the biography film Ed Wood (1994). Sarah also garnered attention for her relationship with actor Matthew Broderick whom she married in 1997.

After making a turn as Mia Farrow's daughter in Miami Rhapsody (1995), supporting roles in The First Wives Club (1996) and Mars Attacks! (1996), and a number of New York productions, Sarah landed the starring role of New York sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw on the HBO series Sex and the City in 1998, alongside Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. The show which focused on the sex lives of four close friends became a huge hit and won Sarah the Golden Globes in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
