Biography:

Usher Raymond IV started singing when he was six years old, joining the local church choir at the request of his mother Jonnetta Patton, who was a choir director. Usher and his younger brother, James, were raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, when Usher was 12 years old.

After being spotted by an executive of LaFace Records at a talent show, the 14-year-old Usher Raymond auditioned for LaFace co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed the gospel choir boy to a recording contract. In 1994, Usher released his debut album, Usher, which contained a hit single, ‘Think of You’. In 1995, he recorded a national Christmas jingle for Coca-Cola. He also joined several top male R&B vocalists to form Black Men United for the single ‘You Will Know’ and sang a duet with Monica for ‘Let's Straighten It Out’.

After graduated from high school, Usher released his second album, My Way (1997) in which he co-wrote six of the nine songs. His single, ‘You Make Me Wanna’, made him one of R&B's hottest artists. The album hit the top of R&B charts for 11 weeks, hit number two at pop charts, and went double platinum. His next singles, ‘Nice And Slow’ and ‘My Way’, also went platinum. ‘Nice And Slow’ even stayed at number one on the R&B charts for eight weeks and became his first number one pop single.

In 1998, Usher turned to acting as he appeared in the horror parody The Faculty and the urban high-school drama Light It Up (1999). He then released a concert album, Live (1999) and returned with his third album, All About U (2000). His fourth album, 8701 (2001), moved him from a teen pop star to a hot R&B singer.

In early 2004, Arista Records released the single ‘Yeah!’ which became a club and radio favorite. By the time Usher’s fifth album, Confessions, was released in March, ‘Yeah!’ had hit the top of the Billboard charts. The album won the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album 2004 while the single ‘Yeah!’ won the Best Rap/Song Collaboration Award.
